When Glam Rock Took Flight: The Story Behind “Rocket”

“Rocket” is another glam rock gem from British band Mud, known for their flamboyant style, catchy hooks, and chart dominance in the mid-1970s. While not as well-remembered as “Tiger Feet” or “Lonely This Christmas”, “Rocket” stands out as a fun, high-energy track that captures the playful, theatrical spirit of the glam era.

The song is packed with glam trademarks:

Stomping beats and handclaps

Catchy, repetitive chorus

Chunky guitar riffs and honky-tonk-style piano

Lead vocalist Les Gray delivers with his usual mix of Elvis-inspired swagger and tongue-in-cheek charm.

The track is produced by the legendary Chinnichap team (Mike Chapman and Nicky Chinn), who also worked with Sweet, Suzi Quatro, and Racey.
“Rocket” was released as a single in 1974, following the massive success of “Tiger Feet”.

It reached #6 on the UK Singles Chart, proving Mud’s chart power at the time.

The song was a staple of glam-era TV shows like Top of the Pops, where Mud would perform in wild costumes and campy choreography.

Though less well-known today, “Rocket” is a fan favorite and a great example of glam rock’s joyful absurdity.

The band often leaned into a retro-meets-modern vibe, combining 1950s rockabilly with 1970s glam fashion and sound.
