The song was composed by Buck Ram, The Platters’ manager and producer. Initially, The Platters recorded “Only You” for Federal Records on May 20, 1954, but this version was not released. After transitioning to Mercury Records, they re-recorded the song on April 26, 1955. This rendition, featuring Tony Williams’ distinctive lead vocals, became a significant hit upon its release in May 1955.
