““Mama Weer All Crazee Now” is a high-octane rock anthem from British band Slade, featured on their third studio album Slayed?.
Written by lead vocalist Noddy Holder and bassist Jim Lea, the track captures the pure, unfiltered energy of glam-rock boogie: stomping beats, hand-claps as loud as drums and a chorus you can belt at full volume.
The song soared to number 1 on the UK Singles Chart, becoming one of Slade’s most iconic and enduring hits.
It perfectly encapsulates a moment when rock didn’t just flirt with chaos—it embraced it.
THE NIGHT SLADE WENT MAD
The song’s original working title was “My My We’re All Crazy Now”, but during a demo session Slade’s producer misheard it as “Mama Weer All Crazee Now” and the band decided to keep it.
The inspiration came after a live show where the band walked into the wreckage of the venue’s seating—lead singer Noddy Holder reportedly thought “Christ, everyone must have been crazy tonight.”
It reached No. 1 in the UK, giving Slade another chart-topper during their peak era of foot-stomping rock.
Despite being written, recorded and released in the early ’70s glam era, the energy and rawness of the recording give it a timeless rock ’n’ roll feel—many regard it as one of the ultimate crowd-participation rock songs.
Slade wrote many of their biggest hits with the idea of live audiences in mind—chant-style choruses, stomps, claps, and the aim of getting everyone singing along together. Jim Lea once said that watching Chuck Berry let the crowd do the singing inspired them.
