“A World Without Love”: Peter & Gordon’s Breakthrough Hit

“A World Without Love” marked the debut single of British duo Peter & Gordon. The song, written by Paul McCartney when he was just 16, was offered to the duo through McCartney’s connection with Peter Asher, whose sister Jane was McCartney’s girlfriend at the time. Despite being a Lennon–McCartney composition, it was never recorded by The Beatles. The track’s melancholic lyrics and harmonious melodies struck a chord with listeners, propelling it to the top of charts in the UK, US, Ireland, and New Zealand. It was included on their debut album in the UK and in the US on an album of the same name.
